Vehicle dynamics assignment on Performance, Ride and Handling.

Performance, Ride and Handling are the three important metrics that we use in vehicle dynamic evaluation. This part of assignment checks students understanding on vehicle dynamics subject and about various design parameters considered for achieving desired handling characteristics of a vehicle. Problem Statement Bring out your well researched views on the following statements and prepare a technically convincing report to justify the same.

A1.1 Statement 1: “Eventhough vehicles with oversteer characteristics are unstable, yet they are used to narrow turning”.(5 Marks)

A1.2 Statement 2: “Uneven or unsecured loads can affect a truck’s handling and are a leading cause of truck accidents” (5 Marks)

A1.3 Statement 3: “Multi axle busses have better handling characteristics than conventional two axle intercity busses(5 Marks)

ANSWER:

A 1.1) Even though vehicles with oversteer characteristics are unstable, yet they are used to

narrow turning”.

When a driver presses the accelerator pedal hard on a narrow road, while cornering than in a straight line, the tyres may become overloaded and begin to slide.

Then the vehicle oversteers (rotates) slightly turning itself towards the exit of the road and allows the driver to get to full throttle sooner than a normal turning, so it helps the car to turn more quickly making the car angle towards the intended angle by covering less area in the narrow roads and we can get back at the straight line sooner.

There is a limit to how fast a vehicle can run through a certain radius, but when the vehicle go through a corner above this speed ,it will break traction leading into a serious accident!

A 1.2) “Uneven or unsecured loads can affect a truck’s handling and are a leading cause of truck accidents”

many truck accidents are the result of improper loading methods. If the cargo is not loaded properly, it can get loose control and fall, leading to serious accidents to other vehicles.

A heavy loaded cargo makes a driver more difficult to brake efficiently in high speed, and that can cause a jack-knife which means the trailer and cab swings around and faces in perpendicular direction.

The loosely fitted load in a truck that easily moves around during a turn can create an imbalance of the truck during cornering which would cause the truck to rollover and even when a truck moving on slope road, the total cargo load high pressure distributes to individual tyres causes the bursting of the tyres.

Tank trucks which are partially filled with fluids can lead into very poor handling while braking and acceleration.

A 1.3) Multi axle busses have better handling characteristics than conventional two axle intercity buses’’

Multi axle buses which are premium come with independent air suspension for all the axles with rear mounted engines which provide a far better stability to the bus handling where as the conventional intercity busses comes up with different suspension system such as pneumatic, air, parabolic etc. don’t provide good stability.

Buses having multiple axles provide more points of contact with the ground, So while passing a bump, only one axle lifts at a time, making sure that the other wheels are on the ground which means less shocks are transferred.

The steering arrangement in multi axles are such that while cornering, the rear wheels tilt exactly opposite to the front wheels makes it possible to negotiate corners with greater ease than intercity buses.
